Chateau Bor was established in the first third of the 19th century by large romantic reconstruction of the original Gothic castle, reconstructed in the early 16th century in the late Gothic style. It’s a two-floor L-shaped building, with a tower on the eastern side. There were large reconstructions especially in the 2nd half of the 20th century, as the chateau was used as a vocational school. Yet the original architectural concept of the exterior was preserved even then, and so were the spatial arrangement of the rooms and many original interior elements, especially works of art and crafts. Also the mural paintings and other 19th century features remind visitors of the former grandeur of the building, together with the older layer documenting the building adjustments in the early 16th century.
The town of Bor has been systematically involved in the rescue of the area that was once largely devastated, and its presentation. The comprehensive nature of these activities is especially remarkable, as they pay great attention to the most important stages of former development, especially the romantic reconstruction in the early 19th century. The oldest layers are present on the ground floor of the southern and western wing – i.e. the system of large vaulted halls from the early 16th century. These areas are then followed by the chateau chapel of St. Lawrence, with the restored renaissance paintings and the main altar of St. Lawrence, then by the tower with the staircase, and the main tower on the eastern side. The romantic layer is best seen in the exterior, or on the main staircase, the staircase hall with the large chateau hall, and the chambers – “Bavarian Rooms”. In all these interiors, the original paintings and cabinets were restored, and appended with chateau-type installations.
The rescue of Chateau Bor is a model example of good heritage care and restoration of historical interiors with special regard to original artworks. The value of the works is augmented by the fact that the town of Bor has been using the reconstructed interiors as venues for various cultural events. Thus, the cultural values of the chateau are presented to general public, in addition to access provided in tours.
